Also revision surgeries on artificial hip or knee joints are part of my portfolio in endoprothetics.
At the hip joint, infection of the prosthetic material, early subsidence of the shaft, or a fracture of the bone with involvement of the implants are particularly feared complications.
Often, a primary hip implant can be used for revision surgery. Sometimes, special revision implants are necessary.
COMMON REASONS for a prosthesis replacement on the knee are, in addition to infection, e.g., instability or persistent pain.
In the context of a repeated knee operation,
special implants are often necessary to replace defective ligaments (using a so-called
coupled prosthesis) or to rebuild bone defects (using augments or bone replacement material).
IF YOU SUFFER FROM COMPLICATIONS AFTER IMPLANTATION OF AN ARTIFICIAL JOINT I WILL BE HAPPY TO ADVISE YOU ON THE POSSIBLE THERAPY OPTIONS! A PROSTHESIS REPLACEMENT IS ALWAYS THE LAST OPTION.
Prosthesis replacement - revisions of hip and knee endoprostheses
In our joint replacement specialty practice, ENDOPROTHETICUM Rhein-Main, we have comprehensive expertise in the surgical treatment of joints. In addition to the initial implantation of artificial joints, the expert exchange of hip and knee prostheses, known as revision or prosthesis replacement, is one of our core competencies. Professor Dr. med. Karl Philipp Kutzner is a renowned orthopedic surgeon and your experienced contact person for this complex procedure.
When is a prosthesis replacement necessary?
An artificial hip or knee joint has a limited lifespan. Although modern prosthetics often last 15 to 20 years or more today, various factors can make replacement necessary. The most common reason is aseptic (non-infectious) loosening of the prosthesis. This can occur due to material abrasion, leading to an inflammatory reaction and a breakdown of the surrounding bone. As a result, the prosthesis loses its firm hold.
- Aseptic loosening: Material wear and bone degradation lead to prosthesis instability.
- Prosthetic infection (periprosthetic infection): Bacteria colonize the implant and cause inflammation. This is an urgent reason for a prosthetic replacement.
- Instability and dislocation: Repeated dislocation of the prosthesis, especially in hip joints.
- Periprosthetic fractures: Fractures in the immediate vicinity of the implant.
- Material wear or breakage: Rare but possible complications that impair the function of the joint.
Specialized diagnostics and planning in our joint replacement specialty practice
A successful prosthetic replacement requires an accurate diagnosis and meticulous surgical planning. In our specialized practice for joint replacement in Mainz, we use the latest imaging techniques such as digital X-ray and computed tomography (CT). These enable us to accurately assess the condition of the bone, the position and the degree of loosening of the old prosthesis. Based on these findings, we develop an individualized surgical concept and select the appropriate revision implant.
Procedure for prosthetic replacement
